‘What has happened?’: Customers fury over ‘shrinking’ Monte Carlos
Arnott’s Monte Carlo biscuit is once again being criticized as a victim of “shrinkflation” despite the fact that the manufacturer insists nothing has changed.
In recent months, consumers have complained on social media that the layer of cream with raspberry jam coating inside the iconic Australian biscuit is now half the size it used to be.
Jacqui Fegate, host of 3AW Radio, received photos from a disgruntled shopper who sent them to her.
Monte Carlo has always been my favorite, but with the steep increase in cost-of-living, a packet is now a luxury. You can imagine our shock when we opened this packet to find a long-awaited treat for this …”
Both Woolworths and Coles sell the biscuits in 250g packs for $3.50.
Dozens of customers agreed with Felgate, writing that they would “rather spend more money than have them ruin their biscuits in this way.”
Another person commented: “I am sick and tired of getting ripped off. I know that this is just a biscuit.”
A third person said, “All Monte, no Carlo.”
Some blamed shrinkflation, whereby the product size is reduced despite the cost being the same or higher.
Rachael Miller, Arnott’s director of quality, told News.com.au, “Monte Carlo is not different in recent years”.
“Similar variations are possible within a reasonable range, just like when you bake at home.” “Each pack is weighed in order to make sure it matches the weight stated on the package,” Ms Miller explained.
We are proud of our high standards at Arnott’s. Please get in touch with our Customer Care Team if you are unhappy with any of our products. They can help.
Woolworth’s Facebook page was flooded with complaints from another Aussie who said he had been buying the treats for 55 years.
According to the man, the Monte Carlo filling did not reach the edges of the biscuits as the packaging depicted.
He wrote: “I notice that the Arnott Monte Carlo biscuit has a creamy half-size centre now, but packaging shows it right up to the edge.”
After 55 years, I can finally put Arnott’s Biscuits on my shopping list!
