In 2021, Americans consumed more than $7.5 billion in sausages and hot dogs from U.S. Food stores. It’s a relief that they’re not alone. National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC) has just released those American cities contributing the highest to the figures, citing Nielsen statistics for total and per capita sales for the year.

Los Angeles isn’t just the most recent Super Bowl champion, but the city also maintained its position as the best dog in total hot food sales and was followed by New York and Dallas. Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Houston, Atlanta, Washington DC, and Phoenix round out the top 10.
But when it comes to the per capita sales, Buffalo earned the top position, proving that the state of New York may host the most passionate hot dog lovers. Numerous North Carolina cities also demonstrated their love for frankfurters by making the top 10 for per capita sales of hot dogs, including Raleigh/Durham, Greensboro, andand Charlotte.
“Upstate New York and the south each have great hot dog traditions with popular local hot dog brands that drive demand in those communities,” said NHDSC President and Hot Dog Top Dog Eric Mittenthal. “Buffalo is the only city with a baseball stadium named after its hot dog brand, Sahlens, while Carolina Pride dogs are a celebration of their local history dating back more than 100 years.”
Bratwurst and other dinner sausages, such as Italian and andouille, exhibit the same pattern regarding their top overall markets. But this year, New York City earned the top spot, edging out Los Angeles and Dallas in total sales of sausages. However, Louisianans proved to be the most avid sausage lovers per habitant, with Baton Rouge placing No. 1 and New Orleans coming in second.
“Louisiana’s sausage culture featuring boudin and andouille is a great example of how community bonds are strengthened through delicious culinary traditions,” said Mittenthal. “Sausage is a food that binds generations.”
